Course Description: Expect to participate in a discussion focused eLC on how STIs and Mental Health coexist. Examples of how to speak with patients and how to understand their sexual health goals will be brought up, but we encourage you all to bring thoughts & concerns of your own. The intent is to create a collaborative community- in other words, we want YOU to bring your cases and contribute topics. The sessions will be organized and moderated by the St. Louis STI/HIV PTC but the floor will be open for discussion and participation. You will be interacting with other clinical colleagues (physicians, PAs, NPs, nurses, and other health professionals who see patients with or at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)MD, DO, PA, NP, RN) from other health department clinics. We may even have a little friendly competition.

The Clinical eLearning Community will be held virtually on Zoom.

Shared decision making is often recommended as a person-centered way to engage with patients as they make decisions about their health. But what is the best way to have these conversations? In this follow-up session to our prior CAPTC webinar on shared decision making, we will be taking a deeper dive into this topic, focusing on specific scenarios where a shared decision-making approach may help address clinical grey areas in sexual health. 

 

Learning Objectives

  • Utilize shared decision making in at least two specific clinical scenarios (e.g., doxyPEP or nPEP initiation).
  • Describe at least two common problems encountered with shared decision-making and how to solve them.

Course Description:  This course, an intensive overview of STDs, includes 14 hours of lecture over two days.  Topics presented include gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomoniasis, PID, genital herpes, HPV, hepatitis B, chancroid, urethritis/cervicitis syndromes, pediculosis/ scabies, HIV/AIDS, prevention strategies / PrEP / EPT, and case studies.

Course Objectives:  At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe clinical features of reportable STDs: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia.
  • Understand current STD epidemiological patterns.
  • Describe clinical features of common bacterial STDs:  syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia
  • Recognize clinical presentations of common viral STDs:  genital herpes, HPV
  • Demonstrate improved skills in completing STD history and physical exam.
  • Discuss clinical characteristics of common vaginal infections:  trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis
  • Integrate HIV risk assessment into patient care.
  • Demonstrate universal precautions during specimen collection.
  • Describe current approaches to STD/HIV prevention including pre-exposure prophylaxis and expedited partner therapy.
  • Discuss evidence-based strategies for STD treatment, according to CDC’s STD Treatment Guidelines.
