Basic Venipuncture in Public Health and Community-based Settings
A specialized course for WA State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist certification

The ultimate goal of this course is to give public and community health workers the knowledge and skills to perform phlebotomy efficiently and safely to collect a quality blood specimen for analysis.

This course is designed to train health care workers such as HIV testing counselors, disease investigation specialists and field research interviewers to perform basic venipuncture. Prior experience with phlebotomy is not required, although some background in health care is expected.

The content of this course is specific to venipuncture duties common in public health and community-based settings. Individuals who will perform phlebotomy in hospitals or laboratories should seek a more traditional phlebotomy training course.

The content of this course meets the requirements for Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist certification revised by Washington State in 2013 (Chapter 18.360 RCW, 246-827 WAC).
