Clinicians in sexual health are meeting their patients at a vulnerable time that can leave some people feeling disempowered. It is imperative to return as much autonomy as possible to our patients regarding their sexual health. This training reviews one strategy to empower patients to make decisions related to their sexual health aligned with the patient’s priorities: shared decision making (SDM). The Denver Prevention Training Center (PTC)’s SDM training will review best practices, practical guidance, and a helpful framework for navigating conversations that inform and empower patients and clients as partners in care and experts in their health. This interactive session includes opportunities for engagement, practice, and reflection.
By the end of this training, learners will be able to define the core tenants and principles of SDM, outline how and why SDM is effective in working with patients/clients, identify best practices for person-centered communication, and practice client-centered sexual health counseling.
